SANDY FORD

Originally from New Zealand I have been very fortunate to have experienced living in many different cultures. With an education in nursing, psychology and sociology I have always had a keen interest and concern for many different social issues particularly in health and humanity issues. It is with this background of having worked in many different countries in areas related to the fragility and uncertainty of the human condition that I came to understand the value of visual story telling.

Whilst living in Turkey I worked for an organization (UNHCR) assisting refugees and asylum seekers from war-torn countries in the process of rebuilding their lives. During this time I was able to use my life long interest in photography to assist in raising awareness of the struggles and difficulties the refugees were facing.

I also undertook a 2 year project on the Turkish Gypsy Community photographing and documenting their lifestyle and culture which is rapidly disappearing.
From Turkey I came to India and had the opportunity to be mentored by Mr Ragu Rai. This experience not only refined my skills as a documentary storyteller but also opened a whole new world of studio photography for me. I continued my studio/portrait photography education being mentored by Sue Bryce and have developed a love of woman’s portraiture.

Since then I have been photographing weddings, woman’s portraits and also doing my own personal documentary stories. I am also involved with palliative and hospice care for dying people.
